Documents are the part of the journey that frightens people most, and in truth it asks only two things of you: start early and do the steps in the right order.

It is not difficult work. It is sequential work, where each step needs the previous one finished — and where swapping two steps means redoing one from scratch.

Check before you move. The rules on legalisation, translation and comparability change, and they vary with your diploma and with the university you are applying to. This guide explains the logic of the route and the questions to ask. The operative instructions for your case come only from the Italian consulate in Beirut and the course office. Check them with us before paying for any procedure.

What Italy is really asking

All of this bureaucracy answers just two questions:

  1. Is this document genuine? → that is what authentication and legalisation are for
  2. What is it worth in the Italian system? → that is what the Dichiarazione di Valore or the CIMEA statement is for

Hold on to that distinction and every step stops looking arbitrary: you can tell straight away which of the two questions it serves.

The sequence

1 · Get the originals

Your secondary school diploma and your grade transcripts, in the official form issued by the competent body. Not photocopies, not printouts from a portal: the originals, or the certified copies that body issues.

If any are missing, that is your first bottleneck — and it has nothing to do with Italy.

2 · Have them authenticated at home

Before any Italian mission can do anything, the document has to be recognised as genuine by the local authorities. The chain normally runs through the ministry that issued the qualification and then the ministry of foreign affairs.

Exactly which chain applies to your diploma, and whether a simplified route exists in your case, is what the consulate tells you. That is the first question to put to them, and it comes before paying for anything.

3 · Have them translated into Italian

Only now. The translation is made from the document with all its stamps, because it has to reproduce those as well.

Any translation will not do: you need an official one, made or certified in the way the consulate recognises. Ask them for the list or the criterion before you approach a translator.

4 · Get the comparability document

Here you choose between two routes, and the choice is not yours:

Issued byIn practice
Dichiarazione di ValoreThe Italian consulateStates what your qualification is worth in the Italian system. Requires the complete file and runs on the consulate’s timetable
CIMEA statementThe Italian ENIC-NARIC centreRequested online, usually faster. Accepted by many universities, not all

Ask the course office which of the two it accepts. It is a thirty-second question that can save you two months — or spare you discovering in May that you are holding the wrong document.

5 · Make the copies

Several recipients need them at the same time: the university, the consulate, the pre-application. Order a few spare while you are already at the counter.

The mistakes we see most

Translating too early. The most common by far. The diploma is translated as soon as it arrives, then the stamps are added, and the translation has to be redone because it does not contain them.

Choosing between DoV and CIMEA alone. People pick whichever looks faster, and then the university asks for the other one.

Starting after the pre-application. The documents are needed for the pre-application, not after it. Begin in May and you have already missed your turn.

Being careless with names. The name on your passport, on your diploma and on the translation must be the same. A different transliteration between one document and another triggers requests for clarification that cost weeks. If you already have a spelling on your passport, impose it on everything else.

If you are not from the Lebanese school system

In Beirut this is far from unusual: French, American, or diplomas obtained elsewhere in the region.

The logic does not change — authenticity first, then value — but the issuing and authenticating bodies do. It is a variable to declare at the start, because it governs the whole chain. If this is your situation, say so as soon as you write to us.

If you are coming for a master’s

Everything above is about the secondary school diploma, because that is the commonest case. Applicants to a master’s follow the same logic with a heavier file:

  • The degree certificate and a transcript of every exam passed
  • The course descriptions — the official syllabus of each course you took, with its credits. The university needs them to check you have the required grounding, and they are the part students underestimate most
  • The same chain of translation, legalisation and comparability as the undergraduate route

Course descriptions have to be requested from your home university, and it does not always issue them quickly. If you are aiming at a master’s, make that request first — before the stamps. It is the one piece of the file that depends on an institution with no stake in your deadline.

When to begin

January, for a spring pre-application.

Not because the work takes six months, but because waiting for other people does: queues, closed offices, documents sent back over a single line. The time it takes is not your time.

You are not doing this alone

This is the stage where we stay closest. Not because it is complicated, but because it is the one where a mistake surfaces late and is paid for dearly.

Anyone who joins the course gets guidance on documents and deadlines as part of it: we check the sequence, confirm what your university asks for, and tell you when to move.

Frequently asked questions

Dichiarazione di Valore or CIMEA statement — which is better?

You do not decide: the university does. Many universities accept the CIMEA statement of comparability, which is usually faster because it is requested online; others still ask for the Dichiarazione di Valore issued by the consulate. The first call to make is to the course office, not to the consulate.

How long does it take to get everything ready?

Think in months, not weeks. Every stamp passes through a different office, and each has its own pace and its own queue. Start in January and you reach the spring pre-application comfortably; start in April and you are running, and often you do not make it.

Can I have the documents translated before they are legalised?

Almost never. The translation is made from the document in its final form, stamps included, because it has to reproduce those too. Translating earlier almost always means paying for the translation twice. It is the most common sequencing mistake and the easiest to avoid.

How many copies do I need?

More than you think. They are needed by the university, by the consulate, and for the pre-application, plus one to keep. When you order certified copies, ask for a few extra in the same visit: going back for one copy costs more than the copy.

What if I did not study in the Lebanese school system?

It changes who issues the documents, not the logic of the route. A French, American or other foreign diploma follows the same chain — original, authentication, translation, comparability — but through different bodies. Say so at the start to whoever is helping you: it is a variable to handle at the beginning, not halfway through.
